Firefighters forced to retreat as wildfire surges in Gömeç, Türkiye

On July 30, 2026, in Gömeç, Balıkesir, Türkiye, @ilkerkabakci10 shared a video showing firefighters retreating as a wildfire rapidly intensified. In the video, flames suddenly surge forward, forcing firefighters and emergency personnel to carefully retreat as the fast-moving fire advances toward their position. Thick smoke rises above the burning vegetation while strong winds drive the flames across the landscape, making firefighting efforts increasingly difficult. According to reports, strong winds gusting up to 70 km/h complicated wildfire suppression efforts across western Türkiye, creating conditions that allowed fires to spread rapidly and reignite. In Gömeç, more than 650 personnel, along with firefighting aircraft, helicopters, and fire engines, were deployed as crews battled the wildfire for a second consecutive day.
